Dormelletto

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,643 · Postal code: 28040

Dormelletto and its hamlet Dormello are a name in horse racing: the Dormello-Olgiata stud was here, and out of it came Nearco, Bellini, Donatello II and Ribot, whom they called the horse of the century. From the nineteen-thirties, thanks to the work begun by Federico Tesio, this land was the centre of world racing: eighty per cent of the galloping horses in the world come from here.

Under the village lies a Gallic burial ground: around 1987 some fifty tombs came to light, with pots, spearheads, farmers' sickles, bronze anklets and bracelets. In 2006, digging to rebuild the primary school, dozens more turned up.
