The Lombards who settled the village left it a name that named them: Olegio qui dicitur Longobardorum. From the fourteenth century a branch of the Visconti was tied to the place and its castle; the best known of them, Giovanni Visconti da Oleggio, ruled Bologna and was marquis of Ancona.
Its standing as a comune goes back beyond memory, except between 1928 and 1947, when it was merged with Paruzzaro and Montrigiasco under Paruzzaro. At the break-up Montrigiasco stayed with Paruzzaro until 1960, then passed to Arona. The arms show a silver castle on a green mount, with the Visconti serpent swallowing a child.
