Comignago

Province: Novara · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,223 · Postal code: 28060

The name Comignago comes from the Cominia, a Roman family that settled here during the colonisation of the Gallo-Ligurian area and had a house built in the middle of the village: that house, much later, became the abbey of Santo Spirito. The first parchment naming the place dates from 1046. Water surfaces all around in springs and small streams, enough to turn at least four mills: the Molino Vaglio, the Molino del Croso, the Mulinetto and the Mulinazzo, now private homes.

The abbey keeps its river-cobble front with Spiritui Sancto cut into the lintel and, behind it, the brick tower the Umiliati friars had raised in 1282 to serve as a bell tower.
