In 1945 some thirty people from San Nicandro converted to Judaism: a small community had grown up years before around reading the Bible and keeping the Sabbath, in a Gargano town where there were no Jews at all. Almost all of them left for Israel, and live between Safed and Birya; a few stayed here.
The town sits on the hills between the lakes of Lesina and Varano, and they call it the gate of the Gargano: the first document, from 1095, speaks of a Castrum Sancti Nicandri. Above stands the Norman-Aragonese castle, and just outside lies the Pozzatina doline, the largest in Europe. The name, which became Sannicandro at the unification of Italy, was split again in 1999. There are 15,927 residents.
