Travelers pulling into this commercial center within the Gargano National Park step into the setting of a highly unusual religious migration. In 1945, a local Sabbatarian sect of about thirty members underwent a mass conversion to Judaism. Most eventually relocated to Israel, settling in Safed and Birya, though a small Jewish presence remains here today.
Officially known as Sannicandro Garganico until 1999, the city is currently home to roughly 15,900 residents in the Foggia province. While primarily a trade hub bordering Lesina and Apricena, the streets see a noticeable influx of visitors during the peak summer tourist season.
