Foggia is the official one; the statute still allows Province of Capitanata, and locals call the area Daunia, after the pre-Roman people who farmed the Tavoliere plain. Sixty-one municipalities over seven thousand square kilometres make it Italy's second largest province by area: the flat wheat country of the Tavoliere, the Gargano promontory, the mountains along the Molise and Campania borders, and the Tremiti islands offshore.
The Gargano is what most people come for. Vieste has the Pizzomunno, a limestone monolith on the beach under a cliff-edge old town; Manfredonia sits on its gulf; San Giovanni Rotondo draws more visitors than any beach here, because Padre Pio lived and is buried there. Inland the mood changes: Lucera keeps a Roman amphitheatre and a Swabian fortress, and Cerignola and San Severo work grain and vineyards.
