The Most Holy Crucifix, patron of Arnesano
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of July
Arnesano celebrates the Most Holy Crucifix on the first Sunday of July.
The name says the shape of the place: it comes from arna, that is a hollow, and the village lies in the Valle della Cupa, one of the clearest depressions of the Lecce tableland. In the Riesci quarter a burial four thousand four hundred years old was found, with three vases and a small stone idol.
In 1912 Teresa and Giulia Bernardini opened the village's first nursery school, and in its chapel they put four large eighteenth-century canvases — Goliath, Moses saved from the waters, Judith, Hagar in the desert — which came from the picture gallery of the marquesses' palace. On the church of the Annunziata, meanwhile, there is a little turret of 1770 that served as the public clock.
