San Pietro in Lama

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,600 · Postal code: 73010

The official name tells a legend: Saint Peter, on his way to Rome, is said to have avoided still-pagan Lecce by passing through a marshy stretch that here was called lama. But on the old maps the village is also San Pietro de l'imbrici, after the men who worked the clay and made the roof tiles, and in dialect that is the name that stuck: Sampiètru ti l'ìrmici.

In the fourteen hundreds there were thirty-eight families, all on one street, and most of them worked clay. In a late seventeenth-century canvas, in the church of the Croce, the village as it was is painted behind Saint Irene: the chapel of San Nicola is there too, and it no longer exists. Between 1816 and 1865 the comune was officially called Lama.
