Saint Anthony of Padua, patron of Castrignano de' Greci
📅 Every year, on 23 August
Castrignano de' Greci celebrates Saint Anthony of Padua on 23 August.
Griko is spoken here, and Castrignano is one of the nine comuni of the Grecìa salentina. The Greek rite lasted until 1614: in the old mother church there was still the font for baptism by immersion, as that rite requires. Of that church two inscriptions with the date 1575 are left; the rest was pulled down in 1878 to build a larger one.
The name does not come from castrum, nor from the Greek kastron, as people believe: it comes from a Castrinius, the Roman to whom the estate was assigned; «de' Greci» serves to tell it apart from Castrignano del Capo. The new church is dedicated to sant'Antonio as well, for a grave danger the village escaped on the twenty-third of August 1898: the sources do not say what it was.
