Castrignano del Capo

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,334 · Postal code: 73040

It is the southernmost comune of Apulia, and it was born of a destruction: around the tenth century the Saracens levelled nearby Vereto, and those who fled founded new settlements, this one among them. The mother church was begun on the second of April 1743, six weeks after the earthquake of the twentieth of February had brought down the Renaissance one: they raised it between the two towers of the old stronghold.

Inside there is a wooden Saint Michael of 1707 by the Neapolitan Nicola Fumo, of which it is said that the foot does not touch the base: a millimetre of air between them. Of Leuca, which is the tip of the land, it is told that Saint Peter stopped there and that the temple of Minerva became the church de finibus terrae; but the only text that tells of that journey has him landing at Pozzuoli.
