Carpignano Salentino

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,685 · Postal code: 73020

Carpignano is in the Grecìa salentina and has belonged to the union since 2005, but nobody here has spoken grico since the beginning of the nineteenth century. Of the Greek past there remains the crypt of Santa Cristina, with one of the oldest cycles of Byzantine frescoes in Puglia, of the tenth century. The name, scholars say, does not come from a centurion Carpinius, as people repeat, but from the Messapic root karp, that is stone.

On the coat of arms there is a pine: the real one, centuries old, was cut down in 1976, and a young one was planted in its place. Then in 2012, in the fields, the first specimen in the world of a new oak was found, and it took the village's name: the Elegant Oak of Carpignano.
