Sogliano Cavour

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 4,065 · Postal code: 73010

Until 1862 the village was simply Sogliano: «Cavour» was added after unification, in honour of the statesman, so as not to confuse it with the Sogliano of Romagna. The old name would come from Solium Jani, the seat of Janus: and indeed on the arms there are a sun and a moon, the sun god and the two-faced god.

In Roman times it was the granary of nearby Soleto; then came the Basilian monks fleeing the iconoclast struggle, who dug caves and crypts: under the church of the Annunziata that of the Madonna del Riposo is still there. The Greek rite lasted until the seventeenth century, when the Augustinians brought the village over to the Latin one. On the door of the mother church an inscription records who paid for the enlargement of 1889: the offerings collected and the Micheli family.
