Known as San Pietro in Galatina until the 1861 unification of Italy, this southern Salento municipality still echoes its past through its local Griko name, As Pètro, and the Salentino dialect equivalent.
Located 21 kilometers south of Lecce, 27,214 people live in the settlement. Its official designation as a city is a historical distinction, formally granted by a royal decree on July 20, 1793.
