Saint Michael the Archangel, patron of May
📅 Every year, on 7 and 8 May
Supersano celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel on 7 and 8 May. The town's other patron, the Madonna di Coelimanna, is celebrated on the first Sunday of July.
In the Pliocene the ridge the village stands on was a strip of rock a couple of kilometres wide sticking out of the sea, an island in an archipelago made up of the other Salentine ridges: on the rock face north of the houses the marks of marine erosion can still be seen. The name says super sanum, more than healthy, for the air of the great Bosco Belvedere, of which a few centuries-old oaks survive in the Paduli.
In the marsh of Sombrino, drained in 1858, the remains of a church and medieval tombs came to light: a village lived in since prehistory and abandoned in the sixteenth century. Supersano itself was for a long while only a hamlet of Torrepaduli; when in 1853 it became a comune in its own right, it was Torrepaduli that was attached to Ruffano.
