Miggiano

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 3,684 · Postal code: 73035

On the name the source does a serious piece of work: the legend that it comes from miscellaneus, that is «mixed», for the mingling of peoples, is rejected because the phonetics do not work; the «place in the middle» does not hold either, because nobody can say in the middle of what. What remains is the likeliest explanation: the estate of a man nicknamed Medius, that is Half.

In the sixteen hundreds the village was also called Miggiano dei Paduli, and in dialect it has always been Miscianu. In 1480 the Turks sacked and destroyed it, and four years later the Venetians came back to it: the population collapsed. From 1486 the village belonged to the church of Castro, but for ecclesiastical jurisdiction it has always depended on Ugento.
