Tuglie

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,264 · Postal code: 73058

The village was paying taxes in 1373, and then the papers fall silent for three centuries. When the name comes back, in a deed of purchase of 1696, what is being sold is the «uninhabited fief of Tuglie»: of a village there was no trace left. The Guarino remade it, buying the land and carrying out the first land reform; people came back, and in 1737 Charles III set up the università of Tuglie, which at once elected its first mayor.

Before all that there were four menhir in the fields, and the barons took their name from the fief rather than the other way round: the De Persona became De Matino, in the Norman fashion. The upper part of the town, the Montegrappa, is instead a village inside the village, grown since the end of the forties around its sanctuary.
