Neviano

Province: Lecce · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,514 · Postal code: 73040

Neviano sits on the Salento ridges, on wholly karst stone: there is not a watercourse on the surface, the rain sinks into the ground and swells the water table. The name, they say, comes from snow, and indeed there are many neviere here, the pits in which snow was kept for the summer; others derive it from a Roman soldier called Nevius, rewarded with these lands.

Tradition says the village was made by fugitives from the hamlet of Fulcignano, who fled after losing a battle with Galatone. Then the Madonna arrived: two merchants from Gallipoli, caught in a storm, slept in a cave, and the next morning the picture of the Madonna of the Snows they were carrying stayed stuck in the rock. They read it as a will, and built her a sanctuary.
