The historical arrival of Arbëreshë settlers shaped the early identity of San Giorgio Ionico. Originally practicing the Albanian Greek Orthodox faith, these early inhabitants eventually assimilated into the local Apulian culture of the northern Salento.
Currently home to roughly 15,600 residents, the town sits just southeast of Taranto. Beyond its Albanian roots, it is noted in contemporary Italian literature as the 1945 birthplace of poet Anna Marinelli.
