Monteparano

Province: Taranto · Region: Puglia · Population: 2,395 · Postal code: 74020

Monteparano was one of the villages repopulated by the Albanians who arrived in the fifteenth century: the Greek rite was followed here, then the community left it and merged with the local one. Of the language and the rite nothing is left, and today the Salentino dialect is spoken, because this corner of the province of Taranto is Salento.

The village stands on a low hill of the Taranto Murge, at a hundred and thirty metres, some ten kilometres from the sea. Near the square is the D'Ayala Valva castle, and in largo Garibaldi the memorial to the fallen of the First World War, by the Taranto sculptor Aldo Pupino: on 4 November, at the ceremony, veterans of the Second have often spoken. In the fields around, primitivo is grown.
