Torricella

Province: Taranto · Region: Puglia · Population: 4,233 · Postal code: 74020

Torricella has been a comune only since 1954. Before that it was a frazione: of Sava until 1869, then of Lizzano; and until 1993, when Statte broke away from Taranto, it was the youngest comune in the province. Its own frazione of Monacizzo, on the other hand, is older than the village it belongs to.

The settlement was born in the eleventh century, when shepherds and peasants left the coast — Torre Ovo — to get out of reach of the Saracen pirates; the crypt of the Santissima Trinità, out in the fields, is of that time. Today the houses press around a tuff castle with three towers, of the Aragonese age, which the comune bought in 1978 to save it from collapse and restored: the municipal police are in it now.
