Fragagnano

Province: Taranto · Region: Puglia · Population: 5,353 · Postal code: 74022

The name is a Roman man's: Freganius, to whom these lands were entrusted, and from Freganianus came Fragagnano — on eighteenth-century maps it was still written Fregagnano, with an e, but in dialect they say Fragnanu. The last stretch of the Appian Way between Taranto and Brindisi passed close by, and in contrada Puzzu Uelu the ruts of the carts are still cut into the rock, beside a well with troughs for the horses and the soldiers: a Roman staging post.

On monte Santa Sofia, now inside the town, there were round huts in the neolithic, and from the rocks around it the funtaneddhra still runs. Out in the fields the dry-stone shelters where the peasants rested and kept their tools, the pagghiare, look more like small Sardinian nuraghi than like trulli.
