In 1928 Monserrato was swallowed by Cagliari, and to become a comune again it had to wait for a referendum: autonomy came on 18 November 1991, but the town found itself with half its land, from 1,137 hectares to 650.
In Sardinian it is still called Pauli, which means marsh: the Spanish name, from the Madonna of Montserrat, arrived only in 1888, by decree. Of the old farming village the church of Sant'Ambrogio remains, Catalan Gothic of the late fifteenth century, and the grape harvest, celebrated on the last Sunday of September. Today there are 20,449 residents, joined to Cagliari without a break.

Monserrato celebrates Saint Ambrose on 7 December; in August the feast of Saint Lawrence is also celebrated, while on 8 September, before the start of the grape harvest, the celebrations for the Blessed Virgin Mary take place, followed on the last Sunday of the month by the Grape Harvest Festival.
