The third city of Sardinia after Cagliari and Sassari, Quartu owes its name to its position: the fourth mile from Roman Cagliari. In Sardinian it is called Cuartu Sant'Alèni. Today the two cities touch and share the treasure between them: the Molentargius lagoon, the nature park where the pink flamingos nest within sight of the beach umbrellas, and the Poetto beach, which Quartu extends towards the coves of Mari Pintau.
What nobody expects is the mountain: inside the municipal territory, to the east, stands the Sette Fratelli range, woods that yield cork and home to deer, golden eagles and wild boar, with Monte Serpeddì rising above a thousand metres. From the sea to the forest without leaving the comune. The centre keeps its Campidano houses of raw brick and Sa Dom'e Farra, the great farmhouse museum. From here the coast road to Villasimius begins: one of the finest seaside drives on the island.

Quartu Sant'Elena celebrates Empress Saint Helena from 11 to 16 September, with a procession, a grape festival, a cycling race and fireworks; in 1826 a royal decree added the patron's name to that of the town, then simply called Quarto.
