Torre di Foxi

📍 Quartu Sant'Elena, Sardinia · 55/100

The Torre di Foxi stands in the locality of the same name in the comune of Quartu Sant'Elena, along the coast of the metropolitan city of Cagliari. It is one of the coastal towers built to defend the Sardinian shore against attacks from the sea.

What to see

The tower is truncated-cone in shape and built of limestone. It was raised by the Spanish as a defensive system for the Sardinian coasts against possible attacks from the sea. It consists of a single room, on the first floor, which rests on a cistern for the water supply. According to Michele Moncada the date of completion would be 1578.

It is one of the five coastal towers in the territory of Quartu: the others are those of Cala Regina, Is Mortorius, Sant'Andrea (now destroyed) and Carcangiolas.

Visiting

The tower stands in the locality of Foxi, on the coast of Quartu Sant'Elena. The sources consulted give no hours or arrangements for access to the interior: check with the Comune.

Our editors' tip

According to the sources, in fine weather the other towers of the coast can also be seen from the Torre di Foxi: from the Torre del Poetto to the Torre di Mezza Spiaggia, as far as the Torre di Carcangiolas, by now a ruin.
