Our Lady of Montserrat and the Sagra di San Giovanni
📅 Every year, on 8 September; the Sagra di San Giovanni in July, at Sa Marina
Bari Sardo celebrates Our Lady of Montserrat on 8 September, in the church dedicated to her.
Bari Sardo has 3,938 inhabitants in the Ogliastra, some fifty metres above the sea. The old name is Barì, probably pre-Roman Sardinian, and the «Sardo» arrived only in 1862, when a decree of Victor Emmanuel II set it beside Bari to avoid confusion with the Apulian city. In Roman times there was a garrison here called Custodia Rubriensis, from the name of the Rubrenses who lived in these lands.
The village was born in the early Middle Ages, when people withdrew four kilometres from the coast to escape Vandals and Saracens; on the shore, instead, after 1572 the tower was built that stands today on the municipal coat of arms, twelve and a half metres of truncated cone with fifteen kilometres of view, from Capo Bella Vista to Capo Sferracavallo. In the territory there are fourteen nuraghi and the giants' tombs of Canali, Uli and Pitzu Teccu. The local craft is weaving: carpets, cushions and linen blankets worked a pibiónis.
