Feast of Saint Gavinus
📅 Every year, on 25 October
On 25 October Gavoi celebrates its patron Saint Gavinus; the municipal territory preserves nuragic remains, including the Nuraghe Littoleri.
On the side of a hill in the Barbagia di Ollolai, Gavoi looks out over a lake that was not there. The general Lamarmora, surveying the island for the House of Savoy, pointed to the basin south-east of the village as the ideal site for a reservoir; the idea came back with electricity, and in 1926 the company in charge bought an entire quarter of Gavoi to house its offices. Lake Gusana was completed only after the Second World War, and a Roman bridge has stayed under the water.
The village has the old habit of sending its words and its goods out into the world: in the eighteenth century the extemporary poets of Gavoi were known across Sardinia, and for generations the Zillonarzos, the local pedlars, travelled the island selling orbace cloth, knives, saddles, harness, drums and Fiore Sardo, the cheese that still carries the name of Gavoi far afield. Since 2004 literature has come back every July with L'Isola delle Storie, a festival founded by a group of Sardinian writers.
