Lodine

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 358 · Postal code: 08020

Lodine sits in the Barbagia di Ollolai and is one of nine villages — with Ollolai, Fonni, Orgosolo, Mamoiada, Olzai, Ovodda, Oliena and Gavoi — whose speech has kept the glottal stop, the caught sound that the Sardinian of these hills never lost. Its countryside is thick with pre-nuragic and nuragic sites: giants' tombs and nuraghi.

In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the Giudicato of Arborea, in the curatoria of the Barbagia di Ollolai; when the giudicato fell in 1420 it passed to the marquisate of Oristano as a fief of Giovanni Deiana, and in 1478, after the battle of Macomer, to the Aragonese. In 1604 it ended up in the duchy of Mandas, held by the Maza and then by the Tellez-Giron d'Alcantara, and it was redeemed in 1839. In 1928 it was attached to Gavoi and reduced to a hamlet: to become a comune again it had to wait until 1988, sixty years later.
