Onifai

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 742 · Postal code: 08020

Onifai lay in the giudicato of Gallura, in the curatoria of Orosei; when the last giudice, Nino Visconti, died in 1296, the territory passed directly to Pisa, and in 1323 to the Aragonese. From then on it belonged to the barony of Orosei, which was a royal fief: it followed that history until the redemption of 1839, when the feudal system was abolished.

For some twenty years the comune did not exist: from 1927 to 1946 Onifai, Galtellì, Loculi and Irgoli were a single comune, called Irgoli di Galtellì. The village stands a few kilometres from the gulf of Orosei, but it looks inland, and the speech here is the Nuorese Sardinian of the Baronìa.
