Saint Anthony the Abbot and the great bonfire
📅 Every year, on 17 January, with a great bonfire in the piazza
Posada celebrates Saint Anthony the Abbot on 17 January, with a great bonfire in the piazza.
The name says what the place was for: Pausada comes from the Latin pausare, to stop, and it is the name of a stage — a place to change horses, a knot between land transport and sea transport, a border between the two. In Roman times the nearby port took from Olbia the cargoes landed by the Tyrrhenian ships, moved on in lighter boats for the last stretch: some thirty nautical miles of rocky coast, mistral and half-sunk reefs, on which the Romans reckoned from the outset on losing a third of the vessels.
Above the village stands the Castello della Fava, which first appears on a Pisan sea chart of the late thirteenth century and served as a holiday residence for Eleonora d'Arborea. It later became the seat of the Baron of Posada, a title created in 1431 for Nicolò Carroz: the fief was bought back by the Kingdom of Sardinia only in 1856, the last on the whole island to be dissolved. The old village clinging to its hill, with its square tower, is among the loveliest in Italy.
