Saint Paul and Saint Nicholas, patrons of Loiri Porto San Paolo
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Loiri Porto San Paolo celebrates Saint Paul and Saint Nicholas on 6 December.
Loiri Porto San Paolo has 3,234 inhabitants in the Gallura, and it is two villages in one: Loiri is up on the hills, Porto San Paolo is on the sea, facing Tavolara. For centuries this territory was what feudal documents called a salto: the wild, wooded part of a fief, good for gathering firewood and for taking the pigs to eat acorns, or to be rented out to shepherds passing through.
The coast was considered unsafe: there was malaria, which in Sardinia was only wiped out after the Second World War, and there were the Barbary ships, which kept coming almost until the nineteenth century. Until the twentieth century what mostly passed this way was trade and smuggling, and the boats that came to fish were often from Ponza. Then tourism arrived, and the place, which had gone on being administered by Tempio Pausania even after the end of the fiefs, broke away and became an autonomous comune only in 1979.
