The name of Telti is Gallurese, but there is another one underneath it: the medieval form was Tertis, in Sardinian, and before that the place was the Roman Tertium, a modest centre grown in the shadow of the port of Olbia. In the Middle Ages a state border ran through here: the territory was split between the giudicato of Gallura and that of Torres, and the line was the river that today changes name several times along its course and back then carried only one.
The modern village was born late, and by somebody else's decision: the barony of Silvas de Intro was granted in 1603 to Pattada, then to Berchidda and in 1634 to Calangianus, because the first two had failed to repopulate it. In his report of 1769 Mameli de Olmedilla lists the first inhabitants of Badu de Tertis one by one, with first and last names; the settlement then grew around the country churches of Santa Vittoria and Sant'Anatolia and won its independence from Tempio Pausania in 1963. The old border, however, can still be read on the map: in the south the place names are in Sardinian, elsewhere in Gallurese.
