Fluminimaggiore

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,966 · Postal code: 09010

Fluminimaggiore has 2,966 inhabitants in the Iglesiente, and its territory climbs from the sea at Portixeddu up to the slopes of Monte Linas. On the coast there is a cove still called Guardia is Turcus, the watch of the Turks, and the name is not a whim: in 1650 a Barbary raid destroyed the village. It was refounded only in 1704, a little further from the sea, when the viscount Asquer and his wife Eleonora Gessa granted the deed to rebuild the ancient village of Flumini Major; the first inhabitants came from the area of Terralba.

About ten kilometres from the town stands the temple of Antas, Punic and then Roman, with a nuragic village beside it and the quarries from which the Romans took their stone; the same old Roman road leads to the caves of Su Mannau, with their hanging lakes. The rest of the modern story here is the mine: the village grew in the second half of the nineteenth century thanks to the diggings, it was at the heart of the workers' struggles of the early twentieth century — the ones that led to the Buggerru massacre of September 1904 — and with the end of the mines it began to lose people again.
