In the medieval Sulcis churches changed hands like property. In 1066 Vera, wife of the judge of Cagliari Orzocco Torchitorio I, gave the Benedictines of Montecassino six churches in the district, among them Santa Maria di Palmas; in 1089 the judge Costantino I Salusio II took it off them without asking the bishop's leave and gave it to the monks of Saint-Victor of Marseilles; some ten years later pope Paschal II gave it back to the diocesan bishop. Meanwhile the village was filling up with people in flight: the Barbary raids were emptying the coast, and many families left nearby Sulki, today's Sant'Antioco, to come here.

The town you see today is the result of a slow sticking together of hamlets. From the eighteenth century the medaus and furriadroxius, the small rural settlements scattered across the plain, began to join up with one another and with the new houses built along the royal road to Sant'Antioco. The king moved the seat of the municipality here by a decree of 11 March 1863, but the move could actually take place only in 1889, when the new town hall was finished. Of the little church of San Pietro, on the other hand, nothing remains: only two place names, the Santu Perdu stream and the Santu Perdu cemetery, in use until the first half of the twentieth century.
