San Vito

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,822 · Postal code: 09040

San Vito has 3,822 inhabitants in the Sarrabus and a huge territory, more than two hundred and thirty square kilometres: it is the sixth largest comune in Sardinia. The alluvial lands between the Flumendosa and the Flumini Uri have always been citrus groves, and here the late orange of San Vito is grown, a seedless variety that ripens on the tree between May and June, when the ordinary oranges have long been finished.

At Monte Narba, from the middle of the nineteenth century, lay one of the main lead and silver deposits in Italy. In 1864, when the mine was granted to the Società Lanusei, a village grew around the shafts that was a small town in itself: telephone, electric power, houses for clerks and managers, a hospital, the carpentry shop, the mechanical workshop. Today the buildings have largely collapsed, Villa Madama among them, the three-storey palace of the director. The story of those mines is told in the municipal museum, which is called La Via dell'Argento, the Silver Road.
