Santadi

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 3,570 · Postal code: 09010

Santadi has 3,570 inhabitants in the Lower Sulcis, in a valley with no way out to the sea, and the name comes from Saint Agatha: the old church of Santadi Basso, built on the remains of a Roman temple, was dedicated to her, and from Sant'Agatha it went to Santa Ada and then to Santadi. The ground underfoot is the oldest in Italy and among the oldest in Europe: it goes back nearly six hundred million years.

Half the territory is woodland, and the comune is part of the Sulcis park, where an unbroken holm-oak wood of thirty-five thousand hectares grows, the most extensive in the world. Underneath, the water has dug: the caves of Is Zuddas are the finest piece of a territory full of cavities. And water is also the village's unsettled account: the rio Mannu divides Santadi Basso from Santadi Centro, and the bridge that joins them has been carried away more than once, the last time on 27 November 1971. In 1924, on the other hand, no rain fell from the fourth of April to the first of October.
