Piscinas

Province: South Sardinia · Region: Sardinia · Population: 872 · Postal code: 09010

Piscinas has been a comune only since 1988: before that it was a part of Giba. The place emptied more than once in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries because of the Barbary corsairs, and that is why in 1572 the captain of justice of Iglesias noted that the farmers and shepherds of these very fertile lands were useful for keeping the pirates off as well. The name comes from the water: a few minutes from the houses there are two abundant hot springs.

In 1587 Iglesias sold these lands to Pietro Salazar, and the family stayed: the comune's arms still carry the thirteen gold stars of the Salazar, and the villa they had built in the nineteenth century was bought by the comune in 2002. On the fifth of August two oxen carry the Madonna della Neve through the village in a glass case.
