Feast of the Blessed Virgin Immaculate
📅 Every year, on 8 December
On 8 December Seulo celebrates its patroness, the Blessed Virgin Immaculate; the town is often cited in gerontological literature as an example of successful longevity.
Seulo is one of the centres of the Sardinian blue zone, and its registers are where the name came from: it was by studying these figures that Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain coined the expression. Among those born in the village between 1866 and 1925, one in every fifty-four passed a hundred, and more than four hundred out of almost two thousand went past ninety.
The caves of Seulo brought here an international team led by Robin Skeates of Durham University, with Oxford and Adelaide: out of them came the head of a mother goddess and rare rock paintings, between the Neolithic and the Bronze Age. On the border with Gadoni is Sa Stiddiosa, a pool on the Flumendosa under a travertine wall covered all over with maidenhair fern, where the water drips and makes concretions.
