The patron saint of San Giovanni la Punta is Saint John the Evangelist, celebrated on 27 December and on the first Sunday of September, the day of the liturgical feast. The celebration begins in the morning in Piazza Lucia Mangano, when the saint's processional litter is carried to the cathedral's central altar; in the evening, after Mass, the litter goes out through the streets accompanied by traditional fireworks.

The mother church of San Giovanni Battista, raised to archdiocesan sanctuary in 2002, was certainly built before 1600, the date from which the sources attesting its existence begin. The city's co-patroness is the Madonna dell'Idria, venerated in the church better known as «San Sebastiano», built around 1830 and home to a 17th-century painting depicting Santa Maria dell'Idria and two paintings dedicated to Saint Sebastian, recently restored. Among the town's other religious traditions are the feast of Saint Rita of Cascia, celebrated on 22 May in the cathedral where a relic of the saint is kept, and that of the Madonna delle Grazie, on 2 July, one of the town's oldest.
