Read more →Valverde became a comune because of a cemetery. In 1949 Aci Sant'Antonio diverted elsewhere the funds meant for the cemetery of its frazione Valverde, and the people of Valverde did not take it well: two years later, on 6 May 1951, the comune was born.
The name comes from Vallis Viridis, and in Sicilian the town is Bedduvirdi, Belverde. On the coat of arms is the sanctuary of the Madonna di Valverde, founded when these lands were at the centre of the history of the Castle of Aci. The first mayor, Vincenzo Gammino, stayed in office for more than twenty-five years. There are 7,714 residents.
