The town was called Macellaro, and it was a Jesuit fief: they had built there a self-sufficient business, with the Baglio at its heart — storerooms, stables, workshops, courtyards — where the grain of the whole estate ended up.
When the Jesuits were expelled from the kingdom in 1767, the lands passed to the state and then to auction: on 22 May 1779 the king gave them to Giuseppe Beccadelli, prince of Camporeale, and since then the town has borne his title. It stands at 440 metres, at the top of the Val di Mazara; the earthquake of January 1968 hit it hard, and the new houses grew further down the valley. There are 3,448 residents.
