Partanna

Province: Trapani · Region: Sicily · Population: 10,854 · Postal code: 91028

Right in the centre, at number 68 on the corso, you can visit a tomb five thousand years old, never broken into: inside lay a man curled up, his head resting on a rock like a pillow, red ochre all around. In the entrance hall of the town’s technical office, three Bronze Age huts came to light in 1998.

Above the town stands the castle of the Grifeo, who held Partanna from the eleventh century: a fresco in the hall shows Giovanni Grifeo saving count Roger in a duel against the Arab leader Mogat, and the griffin ended up on the coat of arms. In January 1968 the Belice earthquake damaged the mother church and destroyed San Nicola; hence the new quarter of Camarro. There are 10,854 residents.
