Gibellina

Province: Trapani · Region: Sicily · Population: 4,264 · Postal code: 91024

On October 31, 2024, Gibellina was named Italy's very first Capital of Contemporary Art for 2026. Located in the province of Trapani, this municipality of 4,264 residents owes its present form to the 1968 Belice earthquake, which completely destroyed the original historic settlement.

Rather than rebuilding on the original site, a new city was constructed 11 kilometers away. Under the guidance of Ludovico Corrao, prominent creators transformed it into an open-air museum, featuring works like Pietro Consagra's Door to Belice sculpture. Meanwhile, artist Alberto Burri covered the abandoned ruins of the old town in white concrete, completing the massive land art installation known as the Cretto di Burri in 2015.
