Originally known as Paparella, this Trapani municipality took its current name in 1958 when the sprawling territory of Monte San Giuliano was partitioned. It now anchors the five Elimo-ericini towns, housing 11,951 residents.
Though the main center sits inland among wooded hills, the municipal borders reach the Mediterranean. The coastal settlements of Bonagia, Lido Valderice, and Rio Forgia provide rocky cliffs and beaches that draw crowds for summer swimming.
