The church of the Sacred Heart (in German Herz-Jesu-Kirche) is a church in the centre of Bolzano, built at the end of the 19th century by the congregation of the Most Holy Sacrament.
What to see
The design is by the architect Johann Bittner, the same who in 1896 drew up a holiday house for his own family on the Colle di Villa, now known as Villa Bittner. On the façade there is a mosaic dating from 1910 and made by Ignaz Stolz.
The church was built between 1897 and 1899 on the occasion of two anniversaries: the centenary of the consecration of Tyrol to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the fiftieth anniversary of the coronation of Franz Joseph I, according to the sources. The façade mosaic was therefore added about ten years after the end of the works.
Visiting
The church is in the town centre of Bolzano; opening hours and service times should be checked with the parish, because the sources consulted do not give them.
Our editors' tip
If the architect, Johann Bittner, interests you, look up Villa Bittner on the Colle di Villa too, the holiday house he designed for his own family.
