The church of San Martino a Campiglio (in German St. Martin in Kampill) is a small church in Bolzano in late Romanesque style, consecrated in the 12th century.
What to see
The interior is covered with fine frescoes of the Bolzano school of the 15th century. The present building is said to date largely from the 14th century, in the Bolzano style (Bozner Stil), with Romanesque and Gothic elements. The church stands at Campiglio, in an area squeezed between the A22 motorway and the river Isarco.
The church is first named in 1180, when it was consecrated by the bishop of Trent together with five other churches of the Bolzano area, as handed down by the so-called Bozner Chronik, the chronicle of Bolzano, an annalistic source of the 14th century. The building seen today thus has a history in two stages: the consecration of 1180 and the rebuilding, for the most part, in the 14th century.
Visiting
The church is at Campiglio, between the A22 and the Isarco, in Bolzano; opening hours and access to the interior should be checked, because the sources consulted do not give them.
Our editors' tip
If you manage to get in, look at the 15th-century Bolzano frescoes that cover the interior; from outside, note how tightly the church is squeezed between the motorway and the river.
