Brunico bears the name of the man who founded it: prince-bishop Bruno von Kirchberg, who in the mid-thirteenth century put the castle up there and the town below — the only such case in South Tyrol. The first document naming it dates from 23 February 1256.
On the merchants' road between Augsburg and Venice the town grew rich, and in the fifteenth century Michael Pacher's workshop, here in Bruneck, was the most famous in the Alps. On 11 April 1723 a fire that started near the parish church carried off a good part of it. Today the castle holds one of Reinhold Messner's museums, and on the Plan de Corones there is another, designed by Zaha Hadid. There are 15,397 residents.
