Castelrotto (Kastelruth) sits at the foot of the Alpe di Siusi, Europe's largest high-altitude plateau, with Sciliar and Sassolungo as backdrop: endless meadows in summer, gentle slopes in winter, and the gondola rising from the village. The Baroque bell tower, among Tyrol's most imposing, rules a postcard square.

Traditions here are no shop-window folklore: costumes are truly worn at feasts, the Oswald von Wolkenstein Ride stages an equestrian tournament among the farms each June, and the Kastelruther Spatzen — the most famous folk band of the German-speaking world — have carried the village name up the charts for forty years.
