Ponte Gardena

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 195 · Postal code: 39040

Ponte Gardena stands where the Gardena stream runs into the Isarco, and it grew up around the bridge from which one climbs into the Val Gardena. The German name says so, Waidbruck, recorded as Waidepruk as early as 1264: it means «meadow bridge», the meadow being the valley that bridge opened. The village grew as a satellite of the castle above it, the Trostburg, which was also the seat of the judicial district.

That bridge is in the coat of arms: a band of silver and red on a blue ground, the blue standing for the Isarco and the two colours coming from the arms of the counts of Wolkenstein, owners of the Trostburg since 1385. The road linking the village to Castelrotto dates from 1887. Three languages are spoken here: most inhabitants have German as their first language, then come Italian and Ladin.
