Magrè sulla strada del vino

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,281 · Postal code: 39040

The name holds a small documentary surprise: the Italian form, Magrè, appears in the records as early as 1215, while the German one, Margrid, is first read in 1292. Until 1971 the comune was called Magrè all'Adige; then it took the name of the wine road, the route among the vineyards and cellars that runs past it.

The volunteer fire brigade has been here since 1886, but its station is new: since 2010 it has been inside the rock, dug into the cliffs of Favogna to the design of two young architects from Bressanone. Another date counts here: in 1946, after the De Gasperi-Gruber agreement, Magrè passed from the province of Trento to that of Bolzano.
