Dating back to the year 901, Brixen (Bressanone in Italian) is the oldest town in South Tyrol, predating the County of Tyrol by three centuries. Set where the Eisack and Rienz rivers meet, the settlement fell under the control of powerful prince-bishops in 1004, serving as their primary residence and administrative capital.
With 20,677 residents, it ranks as the province's third-largest municipality and co-hosts the regional diocese. The deep ecclesiastical roots remain evident in the local cathedral, which safeguards the relics of Saints Albuin and Ingenuin, and during the August processions honoring Saint Cassian of Imola.
