Predoi

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 604 · Postal code: 39030

Predoi, Prettau in German, is the northernmost municipality in Italy: its town hall is the only one in the whole country to stand beyond the forty-seventh parallel. It is also the only Italian municipality bordering both parts of Austrian Tyrol, North and East, and the only one that touches the province of Salzburg, through the Forcella del Picco pass that leads to Krimml. It lies at the far end of the Aurina valley, under the glaciers of the Picco dei Tre Signori.

Copper has been dug here since prehistory: legend says a farmer found the seam while trying to tame a bull, and that from the horns driven into the ground came a golden sand that everyone took for gold. In 1375 it was written that «in almost every house a miner is hammering»; the last mines closed in 1893, and the old Sant'Ignazio adit has become a museum. When the copper ran out, the women's work remained: bobbin lace, handed down from one generation to the next. In 1455 Nicholas of Cusa himself consecrated the little church of Santo Spirito.
